Evaluation

What we're the main aims for your script and nine key frames?

The aim in both my script and my key frames involved showing the audience a well planned, developed and edited sequal scene as well as supporting my thesis through my own creative mind. My objective was to show that criminality in independent films are portrayed as a less glorified way, and have a more direct sense of realism, almost acting like a warning. I did this through high definition quality, sharpenss of colours and contrast, and the use of action. Although it doesn't happen where we are from, wars on drug gangs and cartels in Southern America is a massive issue that is overshadowed by terrorism. A film like savages really identifies the true grit, vengeance, brutality and rehabilitation of the wars on drug cartels. Also savages shows the hierarchy of drug cartels. So my images and script are full of action. In comparison to the wolf of Wall Street which seems to almost encourage the audience into a world of fraud, drugs and money laundering, glorifying it to seem like it is exciting and legal.

What codes and conventions we're used to identify in the contextual analysis essay in your script and key frames?

Like I mentioned, i am contrasting the way criminality is presented in both savages and the wolf of Wall Street. I am arguing that films made in Hollywood such and the wolf of Wall Street, really try and glorify the world of pheloneys, and leave their audiences with a kinaesthetic feeling of happiness. In comparison to savages which shows the bare bones of how brutal criminal offence repercussions and consequences can be. I feel that by using high definition in every shot can be argued that it glorifies it, but I have used it in a way that makes it more of the audience being present at the time, also emphasises the aspect of realism there. I have also dressed the set with weapons, one thing than no one feels happy hearted about. Also my contextual essay shows that Martin Scorsese is well known for is his close links to gangster films such as goodfellas, the Italian American and gangs of New York. So we always knew little aspects of the wolf of Wall Street would include gang references. By spotting this it made it much easier for me to avoid any American gangster type of shots, or clues to add to the realism.

How did you use your location report to construct your key frames?

For the outdoor part of the images, a nice open natural looking space nessasary as I was not looking for an English looking setting and more of a foreign more exotic country. I thought the field at my school would be perfect as long as the weather was nice and the sun was out. Also just next to my school field their is a load of containers which I could easily portray to be where drugs or money are stored at the cartels hq. Their is a strip of artificial grass just by my school and it makes the floor look very bright and realistic, which I new would add to the realism aspect of the shots. Finding the internal locations we're easy, finding a dark floor or small confined space to emphasise the brutality of what ophelia was put through whilst she was held hostage.

How successful was your script and key frames in terms of achieving your aims?

I feel like the script not only forces the audience to feel the nerves of the main characters, but show small subliminal realistic signs. This for me massively helps to evidence my thesis in that independent films such as savages really show the reality of crime and the problems that it brings. By using my editing skills I have produces 9 key frames that all show highly contrasted pictures that make it look like it's really set in a southern American country like Mexico or Peru. The real problem that the government is facing in terms of prosecuting drug lords and cartels, is way off of what people would expect to see in daily lives, but I feel independent films like this one, show that side the government doesn't show, and can only tell. I have also proven that independt films have a niche audience that want to be educated aswelll as entertained and producers do not make the film as a product but an experience.

Location report doc

The reasoning behind the choice of location is purely to do with how exposed
The field is and how the set would not need much dressing to emphasise the criminality of the independent film. I tried to replicate a Mexican open land so a quarry would of been perfect, but all quarries needed authorised access. A close second I felt would be an open space with natural settings. Luckily in my 9 shots I had good wether so it was easy to replicate the country Itself. All be if the field in the photos I took for the location report was sunny, it would be better. In the back drop you can see containers. I have used these as part of the set to create a sense of mystery. 'Whats in the containers' the answer is mostly money and drugs, again referring to the meat and bones of criminality and the fight against drug cartels and drug lords. I have enhance the definition and sharpness of the grass and features in my mine key frames to make it look more like an exotic country also.

The next location where my film was shot, is not actually a closet 'like I intended' but it's a floor shot looking up a chimney. The reason for this is that it is a very small and confined space, making it easy for me to justify using is at a closet. There is also old brickwork and insects that appear to be in the shot, which adds to the impact is has on ophelia. I felt that also by using this shot, I could edit it to seem like it was smaller than it actually was.

The that I took of ophelia on the floor under the blanket, I was aiming for a realistic documentary style shot, to show that ophelia was almost being filmed. This creates a sense of realism which relates closely to my contextual study, proving that in indepent films, the representation of criminality is less glorified as independent films tend to have more of a moral than a profit.

nine key frames of my sequal

Ben and shon are crouched whilst talking through their plan of action. At this stage in the film they smoke some marijuana to take the edge off their nevers, again the suits are a symbol of power, no one wants to see a hiest being performed in a tracksuit.

Suits would be a perfect costume for a Mexican drug based film. Suits symbolise business and business symbolises money. The reason for the lack of focus, is that both of the main characters are herbalist cannabis smokers. So it creates the effect that they are under the influence.

ophelia is found famished and parched where she have been starved and is dehydrated. She appears to be unconscious under a blanket under the floor. I have used a high flash in a dark room to try and get a documentary style image, as if she is being filmed in a perverted way, otherwise known as Voyerism.

The extreme close up of the eye emphasises the re-birth of life that ophelia has after hearing bens scream for her, the high definition and extreme colour sharpness I have used to represent the beauty of ophelia and the life that her partners both bring.

Ben and shin are confronted by a member of the cartel as they are carrying out the heist, meaning they are about to fight. The cartel member appeared to be a young boy maybe used as a distraction for ben and shon as they cartel try to stop them getting to ophelia.

The confrontation ends up in a fight, resulting in ben holding the enemy at knife point before slitting his throat,  ben is not a fighter so after this he is shaken up. As you an see in this screenshot ben is crying before he kills the young man, because he struggles to cope with assassination.

After this ben and shon set their stopwatch for 2 minutes time, then time that lado said he would kill ophelia unless he they get their ransom for her, little does he know, the money he will be lad with is money that ben and shon stole from the cartels containers.

This shot shows where ophelia was originally kept whilst being held for ransom, the camera man would cut to this shot as ophelia will I through a flashback sequence of the time she was I'm the closet, being starved, tortured and beaten.

Ben and shon confront the cartel with ophelia tied up behind them, and out of nowhere ben drops to his knees and has been shot in the neck by lado, one of the cartel members. This is a huge disruption as it will change the dynamic of the relationship between the 3 small time drug dealers.

for a knife in his pocket. he gets out the knife and throws
it towards magda when again the camera uses a close up slow
motion tracking shot of the spiralling knife in flight and
it penetrates the heart of magda. The shot then carries out
to shon pulling his gun in slow motion and quickly cuts to
ben shooting off the remaining cartel members.
